Smooth Rock Falls Recognizes Franco-Ontarian Day

The Town of Smooth Rock Falls is recognizing Franco-Ontarian Day by flying the Franco-Ontarian flag. This day acknowledges the contributions of the Franco-Ontarian community to various aspects of life in Ontario. The Franco-Ontarian flag was first flown on September 25, 1975, at the University of Sudbury. It was created by history professor Gaétan Gervais and political science student Michel Dupuis. The flag became an official symbol of the Franco-Ontarian community in 2001. Franco-Ontarian Day was officially named in 2010. Ontario has over 622,000 Francophones and 1.5 million residents who can speak French, making it the largest Francophone community in Canada outside of Quebec.
