Statistics Canada Releases July 2024 Labour Statistics

Statistics Canada has released its labour statistics for July 2024, showing an increase in payroll employment and a decrease in job vacancies. Payroll employment rose by 32,800, or 0.2%, following a decline in June. Over the past year, there has been an increase of 157,700 jobs, or 0.9%.

Sector-specific changes include a rise in health care and social assistance jobs by 17,600, or 0.7%. Public administration added 8,000 jobs, a 0.6% increase, and retail trade saw an increase of 2,300 jobs, or 0.1%. Conversely, manufacturing experienced a decline of 6,200 jobs, or 0.4%, construction decreased by 2,400 jobs, or 0.2%, and administrative and support, waste management and remediation services saw a reduction of 2,400 jobs, or 0.3%.

Job vacancies fell by 22,400, or 4.1%, to 526,900 in July, marking the third consecutive monthly decline. This is a significant drop from the peak in May 2022, when vacancies were nearly double.
