Statistics Canada Reports Increase in Wages and Decline in Job Vacancies

Statistics Canada has released data indicating a rise in average hourly wages for Canadian employees in the second quarter of 2024. The report shows a 5.1% increase in wages compared to the previous year.

The breakdown of wage growth by employment type reveals that full-time positions experienced a 6.6% increase, resulting in an average hourly wage of $28.20. Part-time positions saw a 7.7% rise, with wages averaging $22.50 per hour. Permanent positions increased by 7.2%, reaching an average wage of $27.60, while temporary positions grew by 5.1%, with an average wage of $23.75 per hour.

In addition, the report highlights a significant decline in job vacancies, particularly in positions requiring a high school diploma or less. These positions decreased by 140,900, making up 71.5% of the overall decline in job vacancies. The reduction in job vacancies was noted across several provinces, including Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta.

These findings provide a snapshot of the current trends in wage growth and job vacancies across Canada, as reported by Statistics Canada.
