Timmins Police Introduce License Plate Reader Technology
The Timmins Police Service has introduced Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology to its patrol vehicles. This system is designed to automatically capture and analyze license plate data from passing vehicles. The technology aims to assist officers in identifying vehicles associated with criminal activities, traffic violations, or other investigations. This includes detecting stolen vehicles and drivers with suspended licenses.
Chief Sydney Lecky of the Timmins Police Service stated that the technology is intended to enhance community safety by enabling officers to quickly identify vehicles that may pose a risk. Deputy Chief Darren Dinel highlighted that the ALPR system is expected to improve both public and officer safety by allowing officers to focus on significant community issues.
The Timmins Police Service emphasized its commitment to privacy, stating that the use of ALPR technology complies with the guidelines of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The data collected is reportedly used solely for law enforcement purposes and managed according to privacy regulations.
Residents are reminded to keep their vehicle registrations up to date to avoid unnecessary alerts from the ALPR system.
