Timmins reports bypass and overflow at Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant

The City of Timmins says a bypass and overflow began at 4:08 a.m. on April 13, 2026, at the Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant at 551 Airport Road, and it is asking residents to conserve water during rainstorms.

The city’s notice provides basic details about the event but does not list an end date, end time, or the volume bypassed, marking each as “TBD.”

In its report, the city said municipal wastewater is “99% water,” including stormwater and water from homes and businesses from activities such as washing and flushing.

The city said a bypass or overflow can happen when a wastewater treatment plant, or part of its treatment process, is overwhelmed, often during heavy rainfall or snowmelt.

During a bypass or overflow, the city said partially treated wastewater is diverted away from a treatment process to prevent backups, overflows, or damage to the system.

To reduce flows during rainstorms, the city asked residents to delay or limit water use such as laundry, long showers, and running dishwashers.

The city also asked residents not to flush wipes to help keep pipes clear.
