Timmins set to receive $585,411 in 2026 Ontario Gas Tax transit funding
The Ontario government has announced annual Ontario Gas Tax funding for public transit, with Timmins set to receive $585,411 in 2026. The City of Timmins says the 2026 funding will go toward replacing a paratransit bus and upgrading security camera systems at the Timmins Transit terminal on Spruce St. S.
For Timmins Transit riders, the funding is tied to the city’s accessible, door-to-door paratransit service and safety equipment at the Spruce St. S. terminal. The city says the gas tax program requires funding to be invested in public transportation initiatives that directly support increased ridership.
According to the city, the planned bus replacement is for paratransit, which provides accessible, door-to-door trips. The city has not said when the replacement bus would be purchased.
The city also said security camera systems at the Spruce St. S. transit terminal are slated for upgrades using the same funding. The announcement did not include details on what the camera upgrades would involve.
The city also described changes it says have been made to paratransit service since 2024. Since that time, the city says it has upgraded paratransit vehicles and expanded the eligible service area.
The city also said it introduced a smartphone app for paratransit service that, according to the city, eliminates the need for advance reservation.
The city’s announcement did not provide a project timeline or a cost breakdown for the paratransit bus replacement or the security camera upgrades.
