Toronto youth charged with second-degree murder in Timmins Dwyer Avenue shooting, police say

A Toronto youth who was 17 at the time of a March 14 shooting on Dwyer Avenue in Timmins has been charged with second-degree murder and multiple firearms-related offences, Timmins police said.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act prohibits identifying young people accused of crimes, so the youth’s name is not being released. Police said the youth was located in Cochrane, Ont., on April 23 and taken into custody by Timmins Police Service officers with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police.

In an update posted April 24, Timmins police said the youth faces a second-degree murder charge, as well as charges of pointing a firearm and discharging a firearm with intent.

Police listed additional charges related to possession, handling and alleged use of firearms and ammunition, including: careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; unauthorized possession of a firearm; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition; possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm; knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm; careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; and discharging a firearm into or at a place in a reckless manner.

Police also charged the youth with failure to comply with a release order (other than to attend court) and failure to comply with an undertaking.

The youth remained in custody and was scheduled to appear in court April 24. Police said the youth was to be remanded into custody.
