Utility relocations and traffic controls begin for Evans Street Bridge replacement in Timmins
Contractors are in Timmins this week to relocate utilities and set up traffic controls ahead of the Evans Street Bridge replacement, according to a City of Timmins update posted May 26.
The work will affect how drivers, pedestrians and cyclists cross the bridge during construction. The city said there is no direct detour route, so traffic will continue to use the bridge under temporary controls.
The city said traffic will be maintained using single-lane alternating controls operated by temporary signal lights.
Vehicles and pedestrians will be diverted to the east side of the bridge while reconstruction begins on the west side, the city said.
The project will replace the existing bridge with a new single-span concrete box girder structure. The city said the work also includes a new sidewalk and an upgraded barrier wall, which it said are intended to improve pedestrian safety.
The city said the new design will increase water-flow capacity under the bridge and help reduce spring runoff blockages.
Construction is expected to take about two years because of in-water work restrictions, the city said.
The city said motorists can expect delays, particularly during peak hours. In its notice, the city reminded drivers to slow down and follow traffic signals through the construction zone.
